Vegan Leather: Separating Fact from Fiction

Vegan Leather: Separating Fact from Fiction

A note from the workshop, on a material we have known for years.

Few materials are spoken about as often, or understood as little, as vegan leather. To some it is the future of fashion. To others it is simply plastic with better manners.

We have lived closer to it than most. For years we made it for other brands, long before Nickino carried our own name. What that time taught us is simple: the difference between a material that endures and one that disappoints is rarely visible at first glance.

So we thought we would share what we have learned.

Not All Vegan Leather Is Created Equal

"Vegan leather" describes any leather alternative made without animal hide. It is a wide word, and it hides a great deal.

Two bags may carry the same label and still be worlds apart. One is built on a considered base fabric, finished with care and bonded to last. The other is made to meet a price. On the shelf, they can look almost identical. A few months later, one has cracked at the folds while the other has barely changed.

When you choose premium vegan leather bags, you are paying for the part you cannot see.

Built for the Long Days

Vegan leather has earned a reputation for being fragile. Much of it was deserved, because much of it was made cheaply.

Well-made vegan leather tells a different story. It holds its shape, shrugs off the small scuffs of daily life and keeps its composure through commutes, flights and long working weeks. Yet the material is only half the answer. Reinforced seams, even stitching, sealed edges and honest hardware decide whether a bag like the Arin Backpack is still by your side years from now.

Quietly Luxurious

Good vegan leather should never feel like a compromise.

Grain, weight, sheen and softness can all be tuned with precision, and when they are, the result is a surface that feels calm and substantial in the hand. You notice it when you pick up the Lumi, the Ora or the Mira, and it is what separates a luxury handbag from an ordinary one.

If a finish looks too glossy, feels thin or carries a sharp chemical scent, trust your instincts. Refinement is usually quiet.

An Honest Word on Sustainability

Vegan means no animal hide is used, which is why it sits at the heart of cruelty-free fashion. But vegan alone does not make a bag sustainable. How it is made matters, and how long it lasts matters most.

The most responsible bag is the one you never need to replace. A piece carried for a decade will always be kinder than several bought and discarded along the way.

Vegan or Genuine Leather?

Both have their place. Genuine leather is loved for the way it ages, and it asks for regular care in return.

Vegan leather asks for very little. It is cruelty-free, light on the shoulder, gracious in the rain and consistent in colour from one edge to the other. For those who move through busy days and frequent travel, that ease is its own kind of luxury.

Choosing Well

When you next consider a vegan leather bag, take a moment with it. Run a finger along the edges and look for a clean, sealed finish. Bend a strap gently and see whether it flexes smoothly. Follow the stitching where the handles meet the body, and feel the weight of the zips and clasps. And ask who made the material. A brand that truly knows its materials will always be able to tell you.

A Little Care Goes a Long Way

Wipe your bag with a soft, damp cloth and let it dry naturally. Keep it away from harsh heat and strong cleaners, and rest it upright, gently filled, so it holds its form. That is all it needs.

The Nickino Standard

Because we make our own vegan leather, every Nickino piece begins with a material we know by heart. Each bag is then handcrafted to order around it, which is part of what we mean by a brand built around how people carry.

It might be the Aven Tote Bag, moving from desk to dinner without a second thought. It might be the Arin Backpack, made for the working day, or the Marlow Duffle Bag from our travel collection, waiting for the next departure. Each one is made to be carried beautifully, and for a very long time.
